What is militarism?
Militarism is a focus within a country on boosting the strengths of military by growing the armed forces and spending on military equipment.
What is an alliance system?
An alliance system is a series of agreements (alliances) formed between various European powers to work together to achieve shared goals. E.g. entente alliance: Britain, France, Russia. Triple alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy.
What is imperialism?
Imperialism is the process of gaining and maintaining control over other countries or territories for economic or strategic (military) reasons.
What is nationalism?
Nationalism is a sense of pride in, and love of, one’s country, also the idea that one’s nation’s culture and interest are superior to those of another nation.
What caused the chain reaction of events that led to the world war?
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand made Austria Hungary put all the blame on Serbia. They declared war on them. However, Russia had Serbia’s back as they were in an alliance. Germany stepped in to help Austria-Hungary. After, many more nations joined in the war.
who was Archduke Franz Ferdinand?
He was the heir of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
What were some reasons for Australians to enlist in the war?
- Emotional loyalty and deep affection for Britain (most Australians came from British heritage)
- Britain was the mother country, and we were a loyal member of the British empire
- Australians were proud of their British heritage
- close trade links
- employment, income
- Australians signed up in groups, peer pressure
- duty to their country- to prove themselves
- to be apart of it, to feel the adventure
