Why was the Gallipoli campaign launched?

A
  • The Gallipoli campaign was launched because Britain and France neededto move troops, equipment and weapons to troops in Russia.
  • They planned to move supplies across theMediterranean Sea, passthrough Turkish waters, and cross over theBlack SeaintoRussia.
  • To do this, they had to force Turkey out of the war.

How did the Gallipoli landing go?

A
  • Britain tried to attack through the Dardanelles canal–a sea passagefrom the Mediterranean Sea to the Black Sea. This failed.
  • Hope was the Allies would surprise the Turks, defeat them quicklyand march on to take control of the Turkish capital, Constantinople.
  • This wouldopenthe supply lines needed to Russia, so they could fight Germany and Austria from theeast.

What happened at Gallipoli when they landed?

A
  • 25 April 1915, ground troops from Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand, India and Newfoundland, landed at Gallipoli.
  • Australian and New Zealand troops landed at what is now called Anzac Cove, with 100m cliffs, which housed Turkish fortifications.
  • It was a disaster. And the British commander of the campaign, General Sir Ian Hamilton just ordered the troops to dig in.

What happened in the withdrawal of the Gallipoli campaign?

A
  • In December 1915, Anzacs were ordered to withdraw from Gallipoli.
  • They had to hide the fact they were leaving, rigging up rifles to fire at random.
  • Every Australian soldier was evacuated by 19-20 December.
  • Over the course of the campaign: 8709 Australian died, and 19 000 wounded. 80,000 Turks died.
