The categorical imperative+ its 3 formulations. Flashcards
1) Formula of the law of nature: Universalisation.
If not everyone can do the action, it is not moral. Is it logically possible for everyone to act like this
Universalisation examples.
Breaking a promise: borrowing money and not giving it back defeats the purpose of a promise. It can not be universalised.
Laziness: everyone can do it, but it is wrong. If everyone did it, natural talents would be wasted.
Suicide: not every sad person should commit suicide.
2) Formula of the end in itself.
Is it exploitative? People are ends in themselves, not a means to an end. Humanity is the highest point of God’s creation, so should be treated with dignity. Eg slavery.
3) Formula of the kingdom of ends.
Equality- treat people as you’d like to be treated.
