The Cardiovascular System, biology unit 5 Flashcards
revision
Why do we need a circulatory system?
The circulatory system is the body’s main transport system,
It carries food and oxygen to the cells
and takes waste products away.
what is The Human Circulatory
System made up of?
The heart
Blood vessels
Arteries
Veins
Capillaries
whats the structure of the heart?
It is surrounded by a tough membrane (pericardiam) which contains fluid to prevent friction.
It is a double pump, each side has a upper chamber (atrium) and a lower chamber (ventricle).
whats the function arteries and
arterioles?
Arteries leave the heart and supply smaller vessels, which then turn into even smaller vessels known as capillaries.
Arteries nearly always carry oxygenated blood
(apart from the pulmonary artery which goes to the lungs)
They have a thick muscular coat, to cope with the pressure.
function of arteries?
The artery leading from the heart to the lung, the pulmonary artery, is the only artery that carries deoxygenated blood.
The artery leading from the heart to the rest of the body is called the aorta
veins and venules function and structure?
Veins are thin walled tubes
carry blood back to the heart.
They have a large diameter and valves.
Blood in the veins is under low pressure, and needs valves to keep blood flowing in the right direction.
function of veins?
The veins returning blood to the heart from the body (but not the lungs) are called the venae cavae
the vein from the lungs is called the
pulmonary vein and is the only vein to carry oxygenated blood.
what is the capillaries structure?
Capillaries are extremely narrow tubes which carry blood through our tissues.
Their walls are just one cell thick
