The Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What are the 4 cardiovascular system components?
A pump that provides continuous linkage w/ the other 3 components; A high-pressure distribution circuit; exchange vessels; Exchange Vessels; and a low-pressure collection and return circuit.
What is the systolic blood pressure?
provides an estimate of work of heart and the force blood exerts against arterial walls during systole
What is the diastolic blood pressure?
Indicates peripheral resistance or ease that blood flows from arterioles into capillaries
What do valves within veins do?
Allow blood to flow in only one direction; toward the heart
What are varicose veins?
When valves within a vein fail to maintain one way blood flow
What is hypertension?
systolic or diastolic blood pressure that exceed recommended values
What are effective treatment options for hypertension?
Lose excess weight; Follow a DASH diet (a lower-fat diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and low-fat dairy foods)
What do straining exercises do to blood pressure?
Mechanically compress peripheral arteries that supply active muscle. The arterial vascular compression increases total peripheral resistance and reduces muscle perfusion. SNS, Cardiac output, and MAP all increase.
What is the effect of acute cardiovascular strain w/ heavy resistance exercise in individuals w/ heart and vascular disease?
It could prove harmful
