The Cardinal and Theological Virtues Flashcards
Cardinal Virtues
The cardinal virtues are four essential virtues for Christian living: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance.
Prudence
The virtue that guides a person to choose good and avoid evil, often referred to as the “rudder virtue” for its role in navigating moral dilemmas.
Justice
The Cardinal Virtue focuses on rights and duties in relationships, ensuring we give to God and others, especially the poor and oppressed, what is rightfully due to them.
Temperance
The cardinal virtue by which one moderates one’s appetites and passions to achieve balance in using created goods.
Fortitude
The strength or courage to maintain moral judgment and behavior during difficulties and challenges.
Faith
Faith is the gift of God where one freely accepts God’s revelation in Jesus Christ, involving both the head and the heart.
Hope
Hope is the trust in God’s promise of eternal life and the belief that His grace is working in the world through the Holy Spirit.
Love
The Theological Virtue by which we love God above all things and, from that love, love our neighbors as ourselves.
