What is a right?
A right is something that has been given to people in Canada by a law passed by the government
What is civil liberty?
Something an individual may do without provincial, territorial, or federal government telling them they can’t
What is discrimination?
Happens when a person is left out or singled out is excluded or is denied opportunities available to other members of society because of their age, race, religion, thoughts, ideas or a difference in physical or mental abilities
What is the Charter of Rights and Freedoms?
Protects basic rights and freedoms that are essential for keeping Canada a free and democratic society.

What is a freedom?
Freedom is the power to do something, believe in something, or say something without anyone telling you that you cannot
What are Democratic Rights?
- Every Canadian has the right to vote given that they’re 18 and have lived in their province or territory or 6-12 months
- Every Canadian has the right to run for and be a part of the government
What are Mobility Rights?
Every Canadian citizen has the right to move between Provinces and Territories as they wish
What are Legal Rights?
These give us the right to freedom of speech, and the press, peaceful assemble, travel, due process, privacy, an attorney, and speedy trial in criminal cases
What are Official Language Rights?
These rights state that the charter provides English and French are the official languages of Canada and are equal under these laws
What are Equality Rights?
These rights insure that individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination

What is a plea bargain?
Plea bargain is an agreement in criminal law proceedings whereby the prosecutor provides a concession to the defendant in exchange for a plea of guilt of nolo contendere.
What is restorative justice?
Restorative justice refers to a method of approach to justice that seeks to repair harm by providing an opportunity for those harmed and those who take responsibility for the harm to communicate about and address their needs in the aftermath of the crime.
What is a victim impact statement?
Victim impact statement is a written statement from a victim that describes the physical and emotional harm, property damage or economic loss which the victim of an offense has suffered. The Court must take the statement into account when an offender is sentenced.
