The Calvin Cycle Flashcards
A plant uses the Calvin Cycle to make:
starch, cellulose, molecules for protein synthesis
What does the Calvin Cycle primarily need?
CO2
What is the goal of the Calvin Cycle?
to use the ATP and NADPH to make something useful for the plant (sugar)
Carbon Fixation:
- CO2 is fixed to RuBP by the Ribisco enzyme and this makes it rlly unstable and it breaks into two 3-Phosphogylcerates
- this happens to 3 molecules of RuBP
Reduction:
ATP slans a phosphate group onto the 3-phosphoglycerwate and then NADPH gives it some elctrons => end up with two molecules of G3P a simple sugar
Regeneration:
each G3P has 3 carbons and there’s 2 of themand you need 6 carbons for glucose but you also need 5 carbons to make RuBP
luckily this process happens 6 times so you end up with 36 carbons in the form of G3P, and 1 G3P is used to make glucose (but it can’t yet until another joins it next cycle), and the remaining 30 carbons go back into making 6 new RuBP so the process sustains
