The building blocks of life, cont Flashcards
What are some examples of organ systems in animals?
1.The digestive system
2. The circulatory system
3. The reproductive system
What is the digestive system?
The digestive system includes the gullet, the stomach and the small and large intestines. It breaks down the food you eat, absorbs the nutrients form the food into the blood and removes the undigested waste.
What is the circulatory system?
It transports materials around your body. The heart, blood vessels and blood are part of it.
What does the reproductive system do?
It produces new human beings.
What is the part of a plant above ground called?
The shoot system/ the photosynthetic system
What is the part of a plant below ground called?
The root system
What is the purpose and characteristics of the organ: leaf?
Absorbs sunlight for the plant. Are often big and flat and get rid of waste carbon dioxide at night.
What do stems do?
They help support the plant.
What do roots do?
They absorb water and minerals from the soil and hold the plant into the ground. Sometimes they’re adapted to store food to help against harsh conditions.
What do flowers do?
They are the reproductive organ of plants
What are xylem tissues?
They are tissues made of xylem cells. They’re dead cells which form hollow tubes to transport water and minerals throughout the plant.
What are Phloem tissues?
It’s made up of living phloem cells that carry dissolved food from leaves where it’s remade to all the cells in the plant where it’s needed.
