Groups of people who have lived in one ea for many thousands of years, also known as aboriginal people
Aborigines
An area of land controlled by people from another country
Colony
Someone found guilty of a criminal offence and serving a sentence of imprisonment
Convict
When a powerful country controls over land (called colonies) beyond its borders
Empire
Freedom from outside control and support; breaking away from an empire; self-rule and governance
Independence
A powerful country’s policy of ruling over other lands and people; to have an Empire
Imperialism
The basic equipment and structures (such as roads and bridges) that are needed for a country or place to function properly
Infrastructure
People who went to spread the Christian faith, to heal the sick and to end certain African customs
Missionaries
An open rebellion against those in power and control, especially by soldiers against their officers.
Mutiny
Natural resources, in their basic form, that can be used to make or create other product; eg. timber, coal, wheat, cotton, gold
Raw materials
To struggle or complete frantically in order to get something
Scramble
The action of buying and selling goods and services to make profit
