Why did the Indian mutiny start?

A

The British started using pork and beef fat to grease the bullets of Indian sepoys. To the Hindu sepoys a cow was a sacred animal and to a Muslim sepoy a pig was a dirty animal. Both elisions saw this as an attack on Indian customs by the British.
