The Brain, LTD, LTP, Neuroplasticity, Maximizing brain function and CTE Flashcards
What does the LH do?
It controls logic, language, verbal tasks, etc. Receives sensations from the right side of the body.
What does the RH do?
Creativity, appreciation of music, art, etc.
What does the Frontal lobe do?
It has a higher order of thinking and is involved in things like personality, problem solving and movement.
What are 3 areas of the brain that are located in the forebrain?
Thalamus, Hypothalamus, Cerebrum and the Corpus collosum
What are the two areas of the midbrain?
Reticular formation and the Substantia Nigra
What are 3 areas of the hind brain?
Cerebellum, Pons and the Medulla
What does the Thalamus do?
Relays all sensory info except for smells
Hypothalamus
In charge of maintaining homeostasis
Reticular Formation
Arousal, consciousness and the RAS (reticular activating system) This is the focused segment of arousal
Substanstia Nigra
Movement and coordination
Cerebellum
Coordinates voluntary movement, posture, balance, coordination and speech.
Pons
Regulates sleep, arousal and some muscle movements
Medulla
Survival instincts, swallowing, coughing, HR, breathing, saliva, BP and sneezing.
LTD
Long term depression, a long lasting weakening of synaptic transmissions due to lack of stimulation.
LTP
Long term potentiation, long lasting strengthening of synaptic connections resulting in more advanced or more affective synaptic transmission. Stronger neural pathways.
Neuroplasticity
Brains ability to change or modify dynamically modify structure and functions as a result of experience
Mental stimulation
Any activity that activates the brain and enriches the mind. In early childhood enriched sensory environments can stimulate neuroplasticity processes.
