The Brain And Spinal Cord Flashcards
What is the function of the brain?
Centre of conscious awareness + controls decisions
Where is the frontal lobe located? What is it responsible for?
Located at the front of the brain
Responsible for problem solving + judgment + personality
Where is the parietal lobe located? What is it responsible for?
Located behind the frontal lobe
Responsible for sense of touch, taste and smell + academic skills (writing, reading)
Where is the temporal lobe located? What is it responsible for?
Underneath the frontal and parietal lobe
Responsible for memory, learning and feelings
Where is the cerebellum located? What is it responsible for? What may happen if damaged?
Located at the bottom, underneath the lobes (cerebrum)
Responsible for coordination and balance
If damaged: speech difficulties, movement problems, epilepsy
Where is the brain stem located? What does it connect? What is it responsible for?
Located below the cerebrum and cerebellum
Connects the spinal cord to the rest of the brain
Responsible for automatic functions: breathing, heartbeat, swallowing, digestion
What is the cerebrum?
The largest part of the brain divided into two hemispheres + each hemisphere has four lobes which deal with specific functions.
What is the function of the spinal cord?
Transmits information between the brain and the rest of the body + enables reflex’s to be performed with the involvement of the brain (pulling your hand away from a hot surface)
What happens if the spinal cord gets damaged?
No information can be relayed to and from the parts below the area of damage - these stop functioning
