the brain and nervous system Flashcards
Function of the central nervous system (CNS), and what does it include.
What does the spinal cord do?
The cns is the control center of the body, and includes the brain and spinal cord.
-The spinal cord allows the brain to connect with the rest of the body.
Functions of the peripheral nervous system (PNS), and what does it include?
communicates information from the bodys organs/glands/muscles to the brain.
communicates information from the brain to the bodys organs/glands/muscles.
- Includes any nerve outside the brain and spinal cord.
What are the two PNS subdivisions?
Somatic NS and autonomic NS.
Somatic NS functions
CONTROLS VOLUNTARY MOVEMEMNT
carries messages from the brain to skeletal muscles. ( voluntary movement.)
carries messages from the senses to the brain to be prosessed.
motor neurons. ( SOMATIC )
communicate messages from the CNS to the particular muscle that the human needs to move.
sensory neurons. ( SOMATIC )
carry messages from the senses to the CNS so our brain can interact with the environement.
Autonomic NS function.
CONTROLS INVOLUNTARY RESPONSES
Controls the bodys non skeletal muscles.
Does everything we don’t think about; it’s automatic.
eg. digestion and heartbeat.
What are the 2 autonomic subdivisions?
Sympathetic NS and Parasympathetic NS.
sympathetic NS role.
prepares for action including fight or flight response.
sympatheic NS effect on body.
dilates pupils, heart beats faster and stronger, relaxes airways ( breath deeper), inhibits digestion, increases blood flow to skeletal muscles.
parasympathetic NS role.
calms our body down and returns us to normal.
“rest and digest.”
parasympathetic NS effect on body.
constricts pupils, heart beats slower, constricts airways, stimulates digestion, reduces blood flow to skeletal muscles.
Which gland releases adrenaline?
Adrenal glands - on top of kidneys.
