The Brain Flashcards
What is the cerebrum
The wrinkly part of the brain, which is divided into four lobes which allow have different functions. It is also spilt down the middle into two hemispheres.
What do the two half’s of the brain specialize in?
There is evidence to suggest that the two halves of the brain have different functions. The right hemisphere is concerned with creativity, intuition and movement of the LEFT side of the body. The left hemisphere is concerned with language functioning, analytical thought and movement on the RIGHT side of the body.
What does the corpus Callosum do?
It is a bunch of neurons that joins together the two hemispheres in the brain, and it allows them to communicate which each other
Cerebellum location and function
It sits at the back of the cerebrum, and control motor skills and balence. It coordinates muscles to allow for precise movement.
brain stem location and function
The brain stem is the lowest part of the brain and regulates essential functions for life Eg breathing, heartbeat and scaling. It also connect the brain to the spinal cord. It is made up of three parts: Midbrain, Pons, Medulla.
Frontal lobe location, function and problem after injury?
- located behind the forehead
- involved in planning, logic and emotions
- injury could cause problems with emotions, language and memory
Parietal lobe location, function and problem after injury?
- located behind frontal lobes (top of head)
- tells you which way is up, helps you not bump into things, controls senses
- damage could leads to an inability to locate/ recognize parts of the body
Temporal lobe location, function and problem after injury?
- Located on either side of brain (by the ears)
- helps with hearing, language and memory
- damage could cause hearing loss, language problems and memory issues
Occipital lobe location, function and problem after injury?
- located at back of head (in line with eyes)
- helps with vision and spacial navigation
- damage could cause problems with sight
What and where is the diencephalon?
Contains the thalamus and the hypothalamus, and is located beneath the cerebrum and above the brain stem
Function of the Thalamus
It is a relay staton for nerve impulses from sense organs. Regulates sleep, alertness and wakefulness.
Function of Hypothalamus?
Regulates Boyd temperature, hunger and thirst. Also links to endocrine system to control and release hormones. It is a link between the endocrine system and the nervous system.
