The Brain Flashcards
What is the cerebrum also known as?
The Cortex
Is the cerebrum large?
Yes- the largest part of the brain
How many lobes is the cerebrum divided into?
4 lobes
What is the cerebrum divided into?
2 hemispheres- they communicate with the corpus callosum
What is the right side of the brain?
Creativity, intuition, holistic thoughts
What is the left side of the brain?
Language, functioning, science and maths
What does the left hemisphere of the brain do?
Controls and right side of the brain and the opposite
What is the corpus callosum?
The massive bundle of neurons which join the hemispheres together
Ensures the 2 hemispheres can communicate with each her
Where is the cerebellum?
Back of the cereberum
What does the cerebellum do?
Controls motor skills and balance
Coordinates muscles to allow precise movement
What does the cerebellum allow muscles to do?
Coordinates muscles to allow for precise movement
What are the 4 lobes of the brain?
Occipital
Frontal
Parietal
Temporal
What does the parietal lobe do?
Controls sensations (touch, pain, hot, cold etc)
Primary sensory cortex
Sensory information from body
Special navigation
What does the occipital lobe do?
Receive and process visual information
Contains areas that help in perceiving shapes and colours
What does the frontal lobe do?
Planning and organisation
Problem solving and decision making
Executive functions
Controls behaviour, emotion and impulses
What does the temporal lobe do?
Memory
Hearing, learning
Recognising and processing sound
Understanding and producing speech
Where is the diencephalon?
Beneath and cerebrum and above the brain stem
What does the diecephalon contain?
The thalamus and hypothalamus
What does the thalamus do?
Transfers information from other parts of the brain to the cerebral cortex- regulates sleep
What does the hypothalamus do?
Regulates body temperature, hunger, thirst
Where is the hypothalamus?
At the base of the brain (near the pituitary gland)
Links the endocrine system and nervous system
