Endocrine System Flashcards
What does the endocrine system regulate?
Cells and organs in the body
What does the endocrine system supplement the work of?
The nervous system
What is the endocrine system?
A network of glands that make and secrete hormones
Uses blood vessels to delver hormones to the target site
What system is the hypothalamus in?
Limbic system
Does the hypothalamus release a hormone?
No
What does the hypothalamus stimulate and control?
The release of hormones from the pituitary gland
What does the hypothalamus control?
homeostasis
What do the hormones do that the hypothalamus releases?
Releases hormones that direct other glands to manage their functions
What do the endocrine glands do?
Produce and secrete hormones
What is the master gland?
The pituitary gland
What do hormones do?
Regulate organs and tissues in the body
What does the pancreas do?
Regulates sugar levels in the blood
What do the adrenal glands do?
Fight or flight response
What do the ovaries do?
Secrete female sex hormones
What do the testes do?
Secrete male sex hormones
What do parathyroids do?
Help regulate calcium levels in the blood
Why is thyroid found?
In the neck
What hormone does thyroid release?
Thyroxine
What is thyroxine responsible for?
Regulating metabolism
Where is the pineal gland?
Found in the brain
What does the pineal gland release?
Melatonin- biological rhythms
Sleep-wake cycle
How do hormones work?
They are secreted by a gland then passed through the bloodstream until they reach the target
Hormones work by binding with the receptors on target cells specific to the hormone
Hormones operate all over the body- they take longer to work therefore they have a long-term influence in the body
Where is the pituitary gland found?
In the hypothalamus
What hormone is released from the pituitary gland?
ADH
Growth hormone
What does the pituitary gland stimulate?
The adrenal cortex and the release of cortisol during the stress response
