the brain Flashcards
what does the hindbrain contain
cerebellum, pons, medulla
what does the medulla do
regulates cardiovascular and respiratory systems, controls reflexes, and balance by controlling head/limbs against gravity
what does the pons do
integrates movement from facial muscles and sensation. regulates sleep, dreams and brain attentiveness. relays info from cerebellum to the rest of the brain
what does the cerebellum do
fine control and coordination with information from muscles hound and tendons using purkinje cells
what does the midbrain do
crucial role in processing visual and auditory signals, involves body and head movements, is a channel for the spinal cord
cerebral cortex structure
6 thin layers parallel to the surface of skull
name the lobes in the cortex
occipital, parietal, temporal and frontal
how do the 2 nervous system link
the primary sensory projection area receives sensory info then the primary motor projection area sends signals to the muscles
role of the autonomic nervous system
regulated unconscious processes
sympathetic vs parasympathetic
s- stimulates
p- inhibits
somatic nervous system
sends message for motion to the CNS as the body has sensory and motor neurons
tectum and tegmentum - where and what are they
midbrain
tectum - orientation after recieving info from eyes, ears and skin like turning to noise
tegmentum - movement and arousal. abundance of dopamine neurones - pleasure seeking and motivation
thalamus function
relays and filters info from senses then transmits to cerebreal (bar smell - directly connected)
hypothalamus
fight, flee, feeding and fucking
body temp, hunger, thirst and sexual behaviour
pituitary gland function
hypothalamus sends signals to pituitary to release
stress response - adrenaline
