The Brain Flashcards
Cerebral hemispheres
• divided into 2 hemispheres
• used for speech, memory, behaviour
Cerebellum
• balance, posture, muscle activity
Medulla oblongata
• controls breathing / heart rate
• reflexes
Investigating brain
• surgery - electrodes are used to stimulate the brain
• CT scans —> more in depth pic of brain / little risk of damaging brain
Which part of motor neurone is surrounded by myelin sheath
Axon
Structure & Function of REFLEX ARC
FUNCTION
• a process that occurs in response to danger
• protects body from harm / allows quick reaction
REFLEX ARC PATHWAY
• RECEPTOR, SENSORY NEURONE, RELAY NEURONE, MOTOR NEURONE, EFFECTOR
• receptor - stimulus is picked up by receptor
• sensory neurone - impulse transmitted down sensory neurone to CNS
• relay neurone - CNS has synapses, impulses passed along relay neurone via release of neurotransmitters
• motor neurone - impulse moves from CNS to the effector through the motor neurone.
• effector then causes a protective response against the stimulus
1) impulses are sent from receptors to sensory neurone to CNS
2) impulse transmitted across a synapse to relay neurone (via release of neurotransmitters)
3) transferred across another synapse to motor neurone
4) travels along motor neurone to effector
Effector causes a protective response against stimulus
