The Brain Flashcards
3 sections of the brain
Hindbrain (the back)
Midbrain(the middle)
Forebrain(the front)
Parts of the hindbrain
Medulla
Pons
Cerebellum
The part in the hindbrain involved in vital involuntary functions (heartbeat, breathing, blood pressure)
Medulla
In the front of the medulla in the hindbrain and regulates body movement, attention, sleep, and alertness
Pons
“Little brain” involved in balance and coordination. In the hindbrain
Cerebellum
What is the middle of the brain responsible for?
Hearing and visions, contains part of the reticular activating system
Reticular activating system
Plays a role in attention sleep and arousal, wakes us up from alarms
Parts of the forebrain
Thalamus
Hypothalamus
Limbic system
Part of the forebrain that is the Relay for sensory information (coming from sensory organs, sends message to higher parts of the brain)
Thalamus
Part of the forebrain that is a Structure that is located below the thalamus, involved in body temp, motivation, emotion, hunger, etc and is important to behavior
Hypothalamus
Part of the forebrain that is the Circular structure and is involved in learning, memory, aggression, etc (evolutionary psychologists believe this has the most important aspects for human survival)
Limbic system
4 lobes
Frontal lobe
Parietal lobe
Occipital lobe
Temporal lobe
Lobe located in the front of the brain, involved in higher reasoning skills and problem solving
Frontal lobe
Lobe that processes sensory info including touch, temperature, pressure, and pain
Parietal lobe
Lobe responsible for visual processing
Occipital lobe
