Overview Of Sensation And Perception Flashcards
The stimulation of sensory receptors and transmission of sensory information to the central nervous system
Sensation
What sensory organs are the receptors located
Eyes or ears
How we interpret the sensory information that we receive
Perception
Threshold The weakest amount of sensory stimuli that we can detect
Absolute threshold
Threshold To determine the difference between 2 stimuli
Difference threshold
What threshold allows you to tell when someone raises or lowers volume
Difference threshold
Theory that Takes into account not only sensory input, but also the environment and condition in which one is taking it in
Signal detection theory
Theory for being able to see stars and planets in the sky on a clear night than on a cloudy night in a city
Signal detection theory
2 ways we can process info
Bottom-up processing
Top-down processing
The sensory stimuli is driving the PROCESS (experiencing something new)
Bottom-up processing
The PROCESS that involves our previous experiences with the stimulus (usually used when we know what we’re looking at / used to)
Top-down processing
Inattention blindness
When we can’t notice things that we’d normally notice because our mind is focused on something else
