Causes

A

1905 revolution, ‘Bloody Sunday’. A decade of democratic development since the
revolution in October 1905, elements of democratic rule introduced, eg constitution.
But at same time executive power being made more powerful

  • peasant question: shortage of land and failure of to solve the peasant question,
  • Russia’s participation in WW1. High support for monarchy at beginning of war.

> However, after losses there was falling popularity, people migrating from west.

> Economy started to suffer from shortages, Russian econ’s resources spent on
military.

> Workers and families suffer from these shortages, 1 st wave of protests in Petrograd in 1917 bread riots

  • Falling popularity of N2. He is an alien to the nation, German wife ;> reason for
    Russian army’s losses at the front as queen was a spy.

Event

A

> February Revolution by moderates, putting Kerensky in charge.
Failed to cause any major change and so the October revolution occurred. Lenin returns from exile, and leads a coup d’etat
Planned armed insurrection by the Bolsheviks (with pressure from Lenin). Capture the Winter Palace and major centres of communications on 24/25 October. >Most reps of provisional gov leave and leaving Petrograd in hands of Bolshevik party.
