Causes
A
- Russian warm sea port and naval base at Port Arthur.
- Troops sent to Manchuria, and to Korea, after 1900 Boxer rebellion.
- Japan attacks Port Arthur 1904. 1905 Japan defeats Russian Baltic fleet at Tsushima.
- Attacking Japan a BIG mistake as Japan was ready
- Russia had lots of logistical problems, incl. the transsiberian railway was the only
strategic military route to reach the far east. - Empire lost land to Japan

- January 1905 massacre of peaceful petitioners outside the Winter Palace, ‘Bloody
Sunday’. - Riots and unrest began in army, capitals, etc across the country.
Battleship Potemkin naval mutiny June 1905, peasant unrest, general worker strikes (most serious in
October 1905).
The government were not equipped/ready to deal with the unrest.

> Tsar’s October Manifest: civil liberties introduced, elected legislative Duma.
> was forced to introduce include freedom of speech and freedom to elect deputies.
> Witte becomes the first prime minister.
> StP Soviet emerges, co-chaired by Trotsky. However they are arrested December
1905.
> April 1906 ‘Fundamental Laws’ limit the power of the Duma.
