The Body Systems Flashcards
A group of similar cells that work together to perform a single function
Tissue
The simplest and most basic unit of all things
Cell
2 or more tissues that work together to perform a specific function
Organ
A group of organs that work together
Body system
The nervous system
–>
Controls and coordinates the activities of the body system
Nervous system
A bundle of nervous tissue that is about a foot and a half long
Spinal cord
Is the largest and most complex part of the brain; controls senses and emotions
Cerebrum
Controls muscle coordination, balance, and posture
Cerebellum
The Endocrine System
–>
Connects to your spinal cord, controls heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing
Brainstem
Chemicals that travel in the blood and cause changes in different parts of the body
Hormone
Helps nervous system control and coordinate activities of the body; helps regulate growth
Endocrine system
The thyroid gland produces to much of the thyroid hormone
Hyperthyroidism
A tissue or group of tissues that makes and release chemicals
Gland
Secretes hormones that affect other glands and organs
Pituitary gland
Thyroid gland produces to little of the thyroid hormones
Hypothyroidism
Helps the body respond to stress and danger
Adrenal gland
Regulates blood sugar levels
Pancreas
Works with skeleton system to cause movement
Muscular system
Controls the weight at which your body uses energy
Thyroid
What the skeleton muscle is attached to the bones by connected tissue
Tendon
Any tissue that is made of cells or fibers that contract and expand to cause movements
Muscle
Bones in most joints are held together by flexible bands of connected tissue
Ligament
A place where two or more bones connect
Joint
Allows the limbs to rotate in all directions
Ball and socket (hip and shoulder)
