Why was London a target city?
- Centre of government buildings - chance that leading figures in government might be killed/injured
- Most important port, bombing it would led to food shortage.
- Major industrial centre, destroying factories would damage war effort
When is the 1st Blitz?
September 1940 to May 1941
Describe the 1st blitz
1st attacks focussed in the East End, 400 people were killed and fire broke out. > Late september, attacks began to target the rest of london, damage war effort.
Types of bombs used in the 1st blitz?
- Incendiaries - dropped mainly by 1st wave of bombers. Start fires causing high casualties.
- High explosives - mainly dropped by later waves of bombers. Some exploded later, killing rescue workers.
- Mines - Dropped with a parachute to make them silent, exploded when touched metals.
When is the Lull
1941 - 44
Describe the Lull
Air raids didn’t happen every night. Raids often followed allied raids on German cities.
When is the Baby Blitz
Early 1944
Describe the Baby Blitz
Last attacks by German aeroplanes, most planes stopped by allies.
When is the V1 attacks?
June 1944
Describe the V1 attacks
Drones launched from German bases in France, allowing day-time bombing for 1st time, causing high casualties.
When is the V2 attacks?
Late 1944 to 45
Describe the V2-attacks?
1st ballistic missile, travelling faster than speed of sound hit London, causing 1.3 million houses to be damaged .
