Describe the evacuation policies
Evacuation began on September 1939 and 800,000 children evacuated, many comeback before the blitz. Evacuation is voluntary
Describe the distribution of gas masks
Gas masks 1st issued in September 1938. Once war broke out, ppl meant to carry them all times;however, by March 1940 only 1% carry them and no gas attack.
Blackout policies
Blackouts is difficult for bombers to find cities in night raids. ARP wardens sound air raids.
List 3 types of shelters
- Anderson shelter: install in their garden by digging a hole.
- Morrison shelter: a metal cage.
- Communal Shelters: provided for people in flats.

What are the early problems in the 1st blitz?
- Working class residents were angry that they were not being protected as well as people in wealthier areas. This class resentment eased, as wealthy areas being hit later on.
- Government not prepared for large numbers made homeless.

Balham tube station: On October 1940, 66 people died, when powerful mines hit the street above. Not reported to preserve morale.

1939, set up to oversee censorship and use of propaganda.
How the government use censorship and propaganda ?
- Censorship: Done on a voluntary basis. Newspaper, photographs and radio reports on sensitive subjects to be cleared.
- Propaganda: Use to keep up morale and win support from abroad. Report news that contain positive message.
