What is the biopsychosocial model?
The biopsychosocial model is an approach to describe psychological development and wellbeing through biological, psychological and social factors.
What are biological factors?
involve physiologically based influences that are often not under our control, such as sex, genes, age, and balances of brain chemistry
What are examples of biological factors?
genes, age, gender, brain chemistry, hormones, diseases, sleep patterns
What are psychological factors?
involves all internal mental processes and influences such as ways of thinking, memories and how we understand and experience emotions.
What are examples of psychological factors?
learning and memory, ways of thinking, attitudes and beliefs, emotions, and coping skills
What are social factors?
influences from external social environment in which we interact with others, such as the quality of our interpersonal relationships with family and friends, our social media use and specific cultural influences like beliefs and values.
What are examples of social factors?
access to social support, employment history, relationships, social media, ethnicity and cultural values and tradition
What are biological factors that are considered in depression?
drug and alcohol use, genetic vulnerability, physiological responses to life stressors, depleted amount of specific brain chemicals (serotonin)
What are psychological factors that are considered in depression?
low self esteem, dysfunctional ways of thinking (negative thoughts), coping skills, responses to stress
What are social factors that are considered in depression?
abusive or uncaring relationships, long-term isolation, long-term unemployment, exposure to stressors
