What are the 5 ethical concepts?
Beneficence, Integrity, Justice, Non-maleficence and Respect
What is beneficence?
Maximising benefits and minimising harm and risk involved in participating in certain activities
What is integrity?
Honest and responsible reporting of all information and results and commitment to search for knowledge
What is justice?
the obligation to ensure there is fair consideration of competing claims and there is no unfair burden on a particular group - the researcher must use fair procedures and ensure fair distribution of benefits
What is non-maleficence?
avoiding the causations of harm; the harm resulting from any position or course of action should not be disproportionate to the benefits from any position or course of action
What is respect?
Involves consideration of the extent to which living things have value and importance and must give regard to the welfare, beliefs, perceptions, cultural heritage and capacity to make their own decisions

What is consent procedures?
Ensure that participants understand the nature and purpose of the experiment, including potential risks before agreeing to participate in the study.- it is essential that participants have the competence to give informed consent
What is use of deception?
only permissible when participants knowing the true purpose of the experiment may affect their behaviour whilst participating in the study and the validity of the experiment
What is withdrawal rights?
a participant being able to discontinue their involvement in an experiment at any time during or after the conclusion of an experiment without consequences
What is voluntary participation?
Ensures that no pressure is put on the participant to partake in an experiment, and they freely choose to be involved. - the researcher must ensure all participants have consented to be involved in their investigation
