The Biological Treatments For Szchizophrienia Flashcards
What is the biological therapy for schizophrenia?
Drug therapy
What are the two types of antipsychotics?
Typical antipsychotics and atypical antipsychotics
What are typical antipsychotics?
Dopamine antagonist
What is the main typical antipsychotic?
Chlorpromazine
What does chlorpromazine do?
They block dopamine receptors in the synapse of the brain reducing the action of dopamine
What are the effects of taking chlorpromazine?
Extrapyramidal effects such as, tardive dyskinesia dystonia and pseudoparkinsonims
Other than dopamine what does chlorpromazine effect?
Reduces the production of histamine - acts as a calming agent
What are atypical antipsychotics?
Dopamine and serotonin psychotics that suppress psychosis while minimising the side effects
What is the main atypical antipsychotic?
Clozapine
What does clozapine do?
Binds to dopamine, serotonin and glutamate receptors and temporarily reduces production
what symptoms does chlorpromazine target
Positive
What symptoms does chozapine target?
Positive and negative
What type of patients is clozapine usually administrated to?
Patients at a high risk of suicide
What are the effects of clozapine?
Extrapyramidal effects such as, tardive dyskinesia dystopia and pseudoparkinsonims. As well as catatonia, blank facial expressions, shuffling walk, dizziness and insomnia
What is tardive dyskinesia dystopia?
Involuntary movements of the jaw and mouth
What is pseudoparkinsonims?
When your body is always shaky and always moving
What are the evaluation points for drug therapies?
+ Highly effective - Thornley et al 2003 & Meltzer 2012
- Serious side effects - typical antipsychotics
- Depends on the dopamine hypothesis
- Questionable evidence relating to its effectiveness - Healy 2012
