It views society as structures (family, economy, government) that each fulfill important functions to ensure society runs smoothly.

Places emphasis on power and emancipation. Society is characterized by conflict and competition over scarce resources (such as king of the castle). Small groups of powerful people at the top, and a large group of powerless at the bottom.
