General Clay announced no further reperations were going to be sent to the USSR
January 1947
Britain and USA formed Bizonia - 4 power control had failed
June 1948
in the London conference Britain, France and USA agreed to a new Western currency as well as form a formal constitution
24th June 1948
USSR blocked all road and rail links to Western zones and Western Berlin
cut electricity supplies and 12,000 tonnes of food and coal
Britains response
Britains foreign secretary - Ernest Bevin saw it has USSRs aim to spread communism by putting pressure on - he was adamant not to use military force
USAs response
US General Clay - supported Bevin and stayed present in Berlin
26th June 1948
Britains convinced USA to begin airlifts - flights began transporting 1/4 of what was needed
12th August 1948
4,000 tonnes a day was achieved
31st December 1948
Berlin was receiving more from aeroplanes than rail delivering 6,000 tonnes
12th May 1949
Soviets removed the block allowing the first American vehicle through
consequences
Europe and Germany was split into 2 blocs
NATO was signed
Air lift continued until September
