The Behaviourist Approach - Watson and Rayner : PROCEDURES Flashcards
How were responses recorded?
responses were recorded with a motion picture camera
How were Albert’s emotional responses to certain objects tested
he was confronted suddenly with a white rat, a rabbit, a dog, a monkey, masks with and without hair, cotton wool, burning newspapers etc. (not all at the same time)
- in each instance this was the first time he had seen the objects
What sound was Albert tested with?
Albert was tested with a loud sound, made by striking a hammer upon a suspended steel bar
How was Albert tested with the loud sound?
one experimenter got Albert’s attention while the other used a hammer to strike the bar behind Albert’s head
What was session 1?
establishing a conditioned emotional response
How old was Albert in session 1?
11 months and 3 days old
What happened during session 1?
- when he was 11 months and 3 days old, they brought him to their ‘lab’ again
- a white rat was presented to him and Albert started to reach for it
- at that moment, the bar was struck just behind his head
What was session 2?
testing the conditioned emotional response
How old was Albert in session 2?
11 months and 10 days (a week after session 1)
What happened during session 2?
- a week later Albert was returned for more testing, aged 11 months 10 days
- was shown the rat with no sound to see if the previous experience affected his behaviour with the rat
- after this Albert was exposed to the ‘joint stimulation’
What was session 3?
generalisation
How old was Albert in session 3?
11 months 15 days
What happened during session 3?
- at 11 months 15 days Albert returned for further testing
- the research question at this time was whether the learned link between rat and noise would be generalised to other objects
- Albert was variously presented with the rat, wooden blocks, rabbit, dog seal fur coat, cotton wool, John Watson’s hair
What was session 4?
changing the environment
How old was Albert in session 4?
11 months 20 days
