How many Scots died?
Our of the 21,000 dead one third were from Scottish regiments almost every town in Scotland was effected
When and where did the battle of loos take place?
25th-28th September 1915 in the north of France
What was the point of the battle?
The British and French forces wanted to push back the Germans forces at loos.
What was the plan for the battle?
Lord Kitchener wanted to launch an early attack to distract the Germans so the French could attack later.
Why was General Haig concerned?
He was concerned because the battlefield was extremely flat and his men would have no cover from the German machine gun fire.
How did they convince Haig to let them do the battle?
They promised his extra reserve troops if he needed them and ab fand new weapon. Chlorine gas was used for the first time. Eventually he was convinced
Who was Piper Daniel Laidlaw?
The piper laidlaw climbed out of the trenches during the worst of the bombardment and marched along the top of the trenches playing the bagpipes to encourage his company out of the trench.
Germans didn’t shoot because they thought he was mental.
What happened?
The Germans positions were captured and the forces were pushed back
What happened after?
Haigs reserve forces were slow in arriving which meant the Germans pushed back and gained all the ground they lost.
