What does DORA stand for?
The Defence of the Realm Act
What was DORA?
It was passed on the 8th August 1914 and let the government introduce whatever restrictions were necessary to protect the country.
What did the government want to do with DORA?
Keep the country’s morale high
Prevent invasion and stop spies from e entering Britain
Eight rules introduced under DORA
No-one was allowed to talk about naval or military matters in public places
No-one was allowed to light bonfires or fireworks (stop enemy planes working out where towns are)
No-one was allowed to ring church bells (stop the mixup of an emergency)
The government could take over any land, factory or workshop (production for war)
Beer was watered down (stop people being drunk)
No-one was allowed to give bread to horses or chicken ps (stop wasting rations)
Censorship (letters were censored to stop enemies gaining information)
