The Atom Review Flashcards
Dalton’s Atomic Theory
Same element = identical
Different element = different
Atoms are not created nor destroyed
Combined atoms = compounds
Atoms can be combined, rearranged, and separated
Rutherford’s Experiment
In his gold foil experiment, he found that tiny particles were bouncing off of the gold foil. He also found that most of the atom was empty space since electrons and protons were extremely small.
Atom
basic unit of matter
Isotope Name
Name of element and mass
Nuclear Notation
element abbreviation, mass number ^^^, atomic number vvv
Average Atomic Mass
average mass given relative abundance of an element
Alpha Decay
Helium, -4 mass, -2 protons
Beta Decay
electron, +1 proton, same mass
Positron Emission
Positron, -1 proton, same mass
Electron Capture
adds electron, -1 proton, same mass
Half-life
amount of time for 1/2 of radioactive isotope to decay
Fission vs. Fusion
fission = nucleus splits with energy released
fusion = nuclei combines with energy released
