The Approaches: Psychodynamics Flashcards
How is a person’s mind different to their brain?
- Our mind cannot be seen or scientifically studied, our brains can.
Who is Sigmund Freud?
The main figure in Psychodynamics.
Our mind is made up of what three parts?
The conscious, pre-conscious and unconscious mind.
What is a person’s conscience mind?
The part we are aware of - our general thoughts.
What is a person’s pre-conscious mind?
The part we can become aware if if we really try.
What is a person’s unconscious mind?
The part of our mind beneath the surface - we’re not aware of thoughts/feelings/desires that are stored in here.
Which of the Tripartite personalities is each part of the mind most closely linked to?
- Conscious is linked to the ego.
- Pre-conscious is linked to the superego.
- Unconscious is linked to the id.
What are Ego Defence Mechanisms?
Way the mind protects itself from thoughts and feelings that may cause stress to the ego if they become conscious.
What is a Displacement Defence Mechanism?
A type of ego defence mechanism that transfers impulses from one thing to another.
What is Projection?
A type of ego defence mechanism that gives undesirable thoughts to something else - projects these thoughts onto something else.
What is Repression?
A type of ego defence mechanism that pushes painful memories into the unconscious mind.
What are the three parts of a person’s personality?
The id, the ego and the superego.
What is a person’s id?
The impulsive (and unconscious) part of our personality. Its main aim is to demand immediate satisfaction at any cost, this is known as the pleasure principle.
What is a person’s ego?
This is the conscious, rational part of our mind. Its function is to work out a realistic way of balancing the impulses of the id in a socially acceptable way, known as the reality principle.
What is a person’s superego?
The part of a person’s personality that seeks to perfect and civilise their behaviour.
