The anterior compartment of the leg Flashcards
Tibialis anterior
O: Lateral, superior ½ of the tibia, interosseous membrane
I: Base of the 1st MT, 1st (medial) cuneiform (plantar surface)
Action: dorsiflexion, eversion
Extensor hallucis longus
O: anterior middle fibula and interosseous membrane
I: base of the distal phalanx of the 1st toe (dorsal surface)
Action: extension of MTP, IP of 1st digit,
assists in dorsiflexion, inversion
Extensor digitorum longus
O: proximal ¾ of the anterior fibula, interosseous membrane
I: middle and distal phalanges of lateral 4 toes (dorsal surface)
Action: dorsiflexion, eversion, extension of MTPs - 2nd - 5th digits
Peroneus tertius
O: anterior distal fibula
I: base of the 5th MT (dorsal surface)
Action: dorsiflexion, eversion (both weak)
note the tendons: from medial to lateral, you will palpate
Tibialis Anterior, EHL, EDL
Peroneus (fibularis) longus
O: lateral proximal 2/3rds of fibula
I: base of the 1st MT, 1st (medial) cuneiform (plantar surface)
Action: plantar flexion, eversion
comes BEHIND lateral Malleolus
Peroneus (fibularis) brevis
O: lateral distal 2/3rds of fibula
I: tuberosity of the 5th MT
Action: plantar flexion, eversion
comes BEHIND lateral Malleolus
Gastrocnemius
O: 2 heads attaching to the medial and lateral femoral condyles
I: calcaneus
Action: plantar flexion, weak knee flexion
Soleus
O: proximal posterior fibula, soleal line (tibia), medial middle 1/3rd border of tibia
I: calcaneus
Action: plantar flexion
Plantaris
O: distal lateral supracondylar ridge of the femur
I: calcaneus
Action: plantar flexion, knee flexion (weak)
Tibialis posterior
O: posterior tibia, interosseous membrane, fibula
I: navicular tuberosity and surrounding bones
Action: plantar flexion and inversion
Flexor hallucis longus
O: lower 2/3rds of posterior fibula, interosseous membrane
I: plantar surface of 1st distal phalanx
Action: plantar flexion
Flexor digitorum longus
O: posterior middle tibia
I: plantar surface of distal phalanges of lateral 4 toes
Action: plantar flexion, PIP/DIP, MTP flexion of 2nd – 5th digits
