How did the US expand its territory
A
- when Mexico abolished slavery in 1829, Texas declared istelf a seperate republic in 1836 and then in 1845 during war with Mexico US annexed Texas
- 1847 US captured Mexico city in the Battle of Buena Vista, 1848 treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo signed where US gained California and territoy which became arizona, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, nevada, Utah and Wyoming
- 1846 - Oregon treaty led ot US gaining oregon which led to the creation of the Oregon Trail

Who were mountain men/fur trappers?

- men who went ot rhe rocky muntiasn to trap beavers and other animals for their fur to sell
- told stories of the plains makign them enticing
- fonund passable routes through the mountains - Jed Smith’s discovery in 1924 of the South pass
- acted as guides for the early pioneers travelling to California and Oregon

Donner Party
A
- led by Donner brothers - Jacob and George
- followed the Hasting’s cuttofff which was supposed to shorten the time
- first crossed the Wasatch Mountains and the then Great Salt dessert - took a month and lost 4 wagons, many oxen and cattle
- 23 Pctober joined back on the California trail corssing the Sierras - began their jouney but snow came early
- stranded near Truckee Lake high up in the mountains
- not well-euiped tp withstand the severe winter
- By mid december food supplieshad run low and people began to die
- 17 men, women and children set off on foot to cross, some died ont he wyay others reorted ot canabalism - just 7 made it to the small settlement in California
- of the 87 members 46 survived to California - many of the survivors ate the ded to survie themselves
- ## discouraged the move to California

- AS a teenager the Angel Mironitolld him about 2 buried gold platges
- dug them up and translated the ancient language into english - became the book of mormons 1827
- him and his followers movd to Kirtland Ohio in 1831

- Smith set up a bank ehich beame succesful with both mormons and gentiles putting their money in
- in 1837 when economic depression hit many people lost their savings - increased unpopularity, drove mormons out of Kirtland
