- Originally poses as an old man when introduced to Santiago
- Claims to be the king of Salem
- Persuades Santiago to pursue his journey by “nudging” him through selling his sheep
- Gives Santiago Urim and Thummim
SIGNIFICANCE
-Melchizedek translates to “King of Righteousness” which in the bible is Jesus, perhaps representing his supernatural abilities and presence in the story
Character : Narcissus
- A character in a story told by the Alchemist at the beginning of the book
- He dies after falling in a river admiring himself
- The river ends up crying because he missed admiring itself in narcissus’ eyes
Term : Maktub
- First introduced by the crystal merchant
- The crystal merchant defines it as “it is written” meaning something along the lines of “this is how it should be”
- Santiago continues to use this term along his journey to remind himself that his future is in his hands

- Two stones given to Santiago by the King
- The black stone represents yes and the white stone represents no
- They help to read omens for guidance
