“All who die in Gods grace and friendship, but are still imperfectly purified, are ineeed assured ot their eternal salvation, but after death they undergo purification, socas to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the kingdom of heaven”

Q

Rahner on purgatory

A

It is not a state of suffering prior to entering heaven but a spiritual place where the soul awaits before going to heaven- soul sleep. Allows for a higher state or awareness which hightens chances of repentance.

A place especially for those anonymous christians or inculpably ignorant to accept jesus in their lives

Q

John Hick on purgatory

A

There must be some sort of intermediate state before heaven- necessary for people of all religions or lack thereof to turn to the one true universal God (as per pluralism). All souls will be imperfect to some degree before entering the supreme reality (phenomena)

Q

Purgatory as a symbol

A

Purgatory is just an allegory for the repentance of bad deeds we should be doing in life. We can avoid sin by confessing and repenting, but purgatory is not an actual process after death.

N T Wright on purgatory as a symbol

A

Argues that many of the stories in the bible read literally are supposed to be parables. Perhaps purgatory in the Apocrypha works similarly

Q

Criticism of purgatory

A

Protestant reformation: a fallacious belief in purgatory acted as the catalyst for Luther’s 95 theses.
Used as a way to fleece desperate and grieving people of their money (indulgences).
Purgatory is totally unscriptural apart from the catechism (Calvin).
Sola gratia, sola scriptur, solus christus, sola fide. Extra ecclesiam nulla salus.
No mention of purgatory in the most revered source of eschatology, the PofS&G.

Q

Criticism of purgatory as a spiritual state

A

Rejects Christocentricity, what is the point in being a christian.
Hendrick Kraemer– purgatory cherry picks scripture as confirmation bias.
