Purgatory in the Catechism
“All who die in Gods grace and friendship, but are still imperfectly purified, are ineeed assured ot their eternal salvation, but after death they undergo purification, socas to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the kingdom of heaven”
Purgatory is necessary for those that still have sin unatoned for such that they can successfully achieve the beatific vision- most people will end up in purgatory for various lengths of time.
Who do Catholics believe bypass purgatory?
Mortal sinners go straight to hell

When a Catholic church prays for departed souls to contribute toward their safe passage and purification in purgatory

Monetary gifts to the church that can allegedly buy a dead loved one less time in purgatory.

Purgatory is a real place where the soul awaits final judgement. They will receive a foretaste of their judgement here in either minor reward or punishment

It is a probationary school which gives the soul a chance to perfect itselt before being restored to God in the final judgement

It is not a state of suffering prior to entering heaven but a spiritual place where the soul awaits before going to heaven- soul sleep. Allows for a higher state or awareness which hightens chances of repentance.
A place especially for those anonymous christians or inculpably ignorant to accept jesus in their lives

Purgatory as a symbol
Purgatory is just an allegory for the repentance of bad deeds we should be doing in life. We can avoid sin by confessing and repenting, but purgatory is not an actual process after death.
