What are the five sectors and what are they controlled by?
-Production
- processing
-distribution
- consumption
- research and development
All these are controlled by:
- sustainability, protection and waste management
What is processing?
processing involves food being processed or cooked to make it edible. It can be simply just harvesting and washing fruit this is an example of primary processing.
Secondary Processing:
When the foods physical properties are dramatically altered to create a new food product such as apple sauce
What is production?
Food production is done by the agriculture industry and fisheries.
Agriculture:
- domesticated animals or livestock are nurtured for meat and dairy products
- Growing and harvesting plant crops
Fisheries:
- Farming of fish, shellfish and marine plant species such as kelp and marine algae.
what is distribution?
Distribution is the food being distributed either by air, sea, railway or road.
The food is expected to arrive in perfect condition
Is distributed through two main channels- retail and foodservice.
What is consumption?
Consumption - the person who buys and uses goods and services.
- consumers are becoming more demanding for convenience and discerning about the foods origins and ethical production.
What is research and development?
- Done by scientists to ensure new products are available for consumers
- creating and testing is done to meet the consumer’s demands
- essential the food industry can stay ahead of demands
What is sustainability?
- a food system that delivers food and nutrition security for all in such a way that the economic social and environmental bases to generate food security and nutrition for future generations.
- economic and social sustainability are constrained by environmental limits.
What is protection?
- ensure that food supplied to consumers is safe to eat.
- this could include the natural microorganisms that could cause food to be unsafe to eat or deliberate tampering with food to make it unsafe.
- There is many rules and regulations in order to keep food safe to consume.
What is waste management?
- limits the environmental and health impacts of the disposal of surplus food products or packaging.
- Australian government departure of the environment and energy monitors food waste.
- they have developed a national waste policy that aims to limit waste and apply a universal waste management policy to the food system in Australia
