What is dramatic irony

A

Dramatic irony is specific to plays and this is when the audience are aware of things that characters on the stage are not aware of.

Example:
In Macbeth, the audience is aware that Macbeth has killed the king but the characters on stage are not aware.

What is structural irony

A

Structural irony is when events in the text end up happening are going against what the character thought would happen.

Example:
“The boxing match cannot get cancelled”
.. match gets cancelled.

What is verbal irony?

A

Verbal irony is when the opposite of what the character says ends up happening .

Example:
Mr birling about the titanic: “Unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable”
