What is preliminary?
- used in the initial planning stages
- concept sketches which are quick, small, rough sketches showing ideas
What are the advantages of preliminary sketches?
- quick and to produce
- good way to record designs
- produced using cheap equipment
- useful when showing ideas to clients/colleagues
What are the disadvantages of preliminary sketches?
- not normally drawn to scale
- not normally dimensionally accurate
Who would most likely use production sketches?
What would they use them for?
Architects, engineers, manufactures
To make a product so needs to include as much information as possible
What information does a production sketch need to include?
What types of drawings could these (production sketches) be used on?
Dimensions, moving parts, materials
Orthographic’s, sections, exploded drawings, assemblies etc
What are the advantages of production sketches?
- Important when component parts are to be manufactured
- shows how parts are assembled
- drawing standards are worldwide
- they are understood in all languages
- library of reusable parts can be set up
What are the disadvantages of production sketches?
- training our knowledge required to produce them
- time consuming
- costly specialist equipment required
Who would use promotional drawings?
What would they use them for? How?
- used by the sales and marketing department
- used to advertise a product
- by designing brochures, posters, leaflets, displays etc
What are the advantages of promotional drawings?
- they can be animated to create visual appeal
- can be placed in a virtual environment to enhance realism
- can show a customer what the product will look like
- can look realistic
What are the disadvantages of promotional drawings?
- require skill and knowledge to produce
- can give a false impression of the product
- can’t physically hold a rendered model
