Works Public Administration (WPA) 1935
Oversaw job creation schemes, work given on park building, planting trees etc to hold back dust bowl.
Provided programmes in training young men or helping women learn to sow or learn etc.
Employed 8 million people at a cost of $11 billion
Resettlement Administration (RA) 1935
Built new houses in suburbs / rural areas to improve living condition of people.
Fair Labour Standards Act 1938
Aimed to provide fair pay for workers, tightened up laws against child labour and established a federal minimum wage and working week.
Helped 300,000 workers secure higher wages and 1 million had shorter working weeks.
Farm Security Administration (FSA) 1937
Helped poor people in rural areas to buy land and equipment.
By 1941 $1 billion had been paid to farmers in lawns.
Social Security Act 1935
Set up nation wide system of social security, providing pensions to over 65s and aid to widows, orphans and disabled people.
Unemployment benefits were also funded by the government which would be paid for through specific taxes paid for by workers and employers.
Helped in the long run but did not have immediate effect as people needed to pay tax first to be able to qualify.
Wagner Act 1935
Encouraged workers to join trade union after NIRA made invalid by supreme court.
The National Labour Relations board was set up to protect workers against unfair practices
Union membership rose to 9 million and The National Labour Relations board had 229 lawyers by 1939.
Increase in strikes often violent as employers intervened.
Banking Act 1935
Gave complete control of banks to federal government to remove influence of Wall Street investors and prevent banks from acting in their own interests.
Greatly strengthened the banking system (in 1936 no banks closed)
