The 3 R’s
Reform: Establishment of Welfare system to look after US citizens in need, banking industry improvements etc, looking to prevent future crises.
Relief: Providing money to relieve poverty and hunger providing work through short term employment schemes.
Recovery: Increasing people’s industrial production and workers’ wages solving banking crisis
Emergency Banking Act
Roosevelt closed down all banks for 10 days to establish which ones were safe to reopen.
Roosevelt ended up backing 5000 banks to reopen, encouraging people to redeposit money.
Set up law where if banks went bust people would be entitled up to $2500
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) 1933
Set up across 7 state region of Tennessee Valley to deal with agricultural overproduction and the ‘dust bowl’ that had formed.
33 dams created to irrigate eland generating hydroelectric power as well.
Farmers taught in soil conservation, loans were given out and new forests were planted.
Effect of TVA
thousands of jobs provided in area.
Farming revitalised.
Cheap electricity set up encouraging industries to move to the area further benefiting the region.
Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA) 1933
Dealt with rural poverty and low crop prices.
Farmers were paid to slaughter animals and destroy crop to manage overproduction and decrease prices.
Effect of AAA
By 1936 farm income were 1.5x higher than they were in 1933
Decommissioned by Supreme Court in 1936
Farm Credit Administration (FCA) 1933
Provided funds to farmers struggling to make their mortgage payments
1/5 of farmers were kept on their land in the 1930s.
National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) 1933
Aimed to solve poor economic condition of USA.
Established NRA and PWA
National Recovery Administration (NRA) 1933
Introduced voluntary codes of practice for minimum wage working hours and improved conditions for workers.
Workers were given the right to join Trade unions however little did until Wagner Act
Effect of NRA
Blue eagle symbol set up to incentivise companies to abide by these regulations as symbol seen as trustworthy etc.
2.3 million business apart of the scheme by 1933, therefore greatly helping workers and their conditions.
Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA)
Provided $500 million emergency relief for the poor and homeless in immediate need of food and clothing.
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) 1933
Provided 6 months of work for men between 18-25 for conservation projects e.g. planting trees to stop soil erosion.
By 1940 >2million men had been given work by CCC, with rates of 1 $ a day
Public Works Administration (PWA) 1933
Spent $3.3 billion on public works projects for the unemployed, slum clearance, building school, roads etc.
Provided jobs fr the unemployed and helped improved public amenities.
