How did sports during the 30s impact American people?

A

Baseball was a very famous sport during the 30s. It also had a separate negro league in the 30s. As the depression furthered fans started to drift away but it still remained the number 1 sport. Although the depression had an impact on baseball it was in no danger of going bankrupt.

Why did people go to sports venues during the 30s?

A

Many people went to sport venues to get away from the horrors of the depression. They played basketball, boxing, track and field. Sports were affected by the Great Depression because at first they struggled to profit and due to this their salaries went down.

How did Radios have an impact on people during the 30s?

A

At the start of the decade 12 million people American house hold owned a radio. By 1939 the total had increased to 28 million (had increased from 40%-80% of the population) as technology improved radios got smaller and cheaper. Some radio stations were:
-Magic Island
-Fall of the city
The president posted fireside chats on the radio which provided distractions form the hardship of the depression. It was called the Golden Age of radios.

How did cinema impact people during the 1930s?

A

During 1927 an average of 60 million people went to the cinema on a weekly bases. This increased to 110 million by 1929. The 30s decade was landed the ‘Golden Age of Hollywood’ it was the era in which the silent period ended and talkies advanced in production. Before orchestras played in the background but now they were talkies.

Some actors were Spencer Tracey, Clarke Gabel and Garry Cooper. It influenced the way people dressed (fashion) and how young people behaved.

How did popular culture improve people’s lives?

A

It have people a distraction from the horrors of the depression and not focus on their empty wallets.
Movies such as the wizard of oz was based in Kansas during a drought and frequent sand storms. People could relate to this and it made them feel better.
