• many American invested in their incomes in bonds.
• this meant they effectively leant money to the government by buying war bonds with the promise that the bonds would be payed back with interest at the end of the war.
• during the course of the war Americans contributed $129 billion to the war effort by buying bonds. This gave the government money to spend on war time production.

• the US Supreme commander general Eisenhower, supported integrated combat units. By the end of 1944 black soldiers were fighting in these units and there were hundreds of black officers in the army and marines.

• sometimes there was tension in Britain when African Americans went out with white girls.
• discrimination was worst in the Navy with black soldiers being given the most dangerous jobs of loading ammunition onto ships bound for war zones. In 1944 and awful accident saw the death of 323 people - most of them black.
• expectations changed after the war. Membership on the National Association for the Advancement of coloured people (NAACP) rose from nearly 50,000 to nearly 1/2 million. African Americans were expecting social change after the war while some white people were expecting things to go to normal but there were going to be problems after the war.

• in the munitions and electronic industries 1/2 the workers were women.

• many women in these jobs were earning higher wages than they had before the war . Many were not willing to back to their lives before the war.
• the percentage of married women who worked went up from 35% to 50% 1941-1945
• 4 US states made equal pay for women compulsory while other states tried to protect women from discrimination from their jobs.

• black women who serve in the armed forces as nurses and only allowed to treat black soldiers. When black soldiers were injured only blood from black soldiers could be used in their treatments.
• returning soldiers often expected their wives to return to their domestic roles once the war ended. Society experienced tension in the years after 1945.
• many men still held prejudices against women working in well paid jobs. Especially married women. On the average women earned to 50-60% less than men doing the same jobs and women could still be dismissed from their jobs when they married.
