The 12 Systems Of The Human Body Flashcards
What are the 12 systems of the human body?
Integumentary, Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous, Endocrine, Lymphatic, Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Digestive, Urinary, Reproductive, Immune
What are the structures and functions of the integumentary system?
consists of hair, skin, nails and glands. Functions as protection, thermoregulation, synthesizes vitamin D, transmits sensory information.
What are the structures and functions of the skeletal system?
Skeletal system consists of bones and joints. It protects and supports and provides structure to the body. Aides in movement, stores minerals (calcium) and produces blood cells in the marrow.
What are the structures and functions of the muscular system?
The muscular system consists of skeletal muscles and provides protection (bones, nerves, organs etc…), locomotion and generates heat.
What are the structures and functions of the nervous system?
The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, eyes and ears. It regulates body activities by sending nerve impulses. Detects imbalance in the internal and external environment and responds by causing muscle contractions and glandular secretions.
What are the structures and functions of the endocrine system?
The endocrine system includes hormone producing glands (thyroid, pituitary, pineal, hypothalamus, parathyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes, adrenal, and thymus glands) and hormone producing cells. It regulates body functions by releasing hormones.
What are the structures and functions of the lymphatic system?
The lymphatic systems includes organs concerned with body defense: lymph nodes, tonsils, thymus, spleen, lymph fluid, lymphoid tissues and bone marrow. It acts as a transport system to the blood by removing damaged or abnormal cells and protects the body from pathogens. It also contains sites where immune cells reach maturity.
What are the structures and functions of The cardiovascular system?
The cardiovascular systems consists of the heart, blood vessels and blood. It pumps oxygenated blood and nutrients to all the cells in the body and transports waste away. It helps regulate other bodily functions such as temperature, acid-base balance and immunity.
What are the structures and functions of the respiratory system?
The respiratory system consists of the lungs, the larynx and trachea. It transfers inhaled oxygen to our blood and carbon monoxide from our blood to exhale out. It allows for speech and helps maintain acid-base balance.
What are the structures and functions of the digestive system?
The digestive system breaks down, digests and assimilates food. It includes the organs of the GI tract beginning with the mouth, leading through the stomach, intestines and ending with the anus. Associated organs include the salivary glands, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder.
What are the structures and functions of the urinary tract?
The urinary system includes the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. It functions to produce, store and eliminate urine. It regulates blood volume and helps maintain acid-base balance and mineral balance. Also helps produce red blood cells.
What are the structures and functions of the reproductive system?
The reproductive system consists of the gonads (ovaries and testes) and associated organs and the penis and vagina. This system produces germ cells (sperm and egg) that unite to form a new organism.
What are the structures and functions of the immune system?
The immune system is comprised of components of the skeletal, cardiovascular, lymphatic, digestive, respiratory, and integumentary systems which all work together to protect us from disease.
