Who decides the outcomes?
CRIMINAL CASES
A judge and jury decide serious cases in a crown court.
A magistrate decides less serious cases in a magistrate’s court.

CIVIL CASES
A judge without a jury
Judge
Very powerful.
Decides the offenders punishment and if they’re guilty or not.
Magistrate
They have 7 years of experience as a solicitor.
Jury
12 people randomly picked from the public who comes to the crown court and decides whether a person is guilty or not.
Police.
They enforce the laws
Solicitors
Give legal advice to people who go court.
Prepares the case before court.
Barristers
Represent their clients on court, they are biased.
Point of punishment
Separates crime from the public.
Protests the public.
Stop people from committing crime.
Prison
Prison is for serious crimes such as murder and robbery.
Community services
People work in the community with a probation officer
Curfew
You must be at home for up to 12 hours a day.
Exclusion order
This stops from places where you caused trouble
Reparation order
When you work for your victims to make up for the harm you did
Fines
A fine must reflect the offenders ability to pay
Absolute discharge
When going to court is seen as punishment enough and no further action is taken
Conditional discharge
You will have to keep out of trouble for a short amount of time
Appeal
If you think you didn’t have a fair trial or think the sentence is too harsh, you can get an appeal to try change the decision made by the court.
