Q

Explain the following supplementary text: “La Condition Humaine” Magritte

A

. This is a picture with a canvas on an easel in front of a window.
. The canvas has a painting of the view outside the window and is aligned perfectly to trick viewers into believing that it is just a view through the window.
. La condition humaine = the human condition
. The human condition is the trait of humans to always want answers and meanings.
. This work represents the fact that not all things have a meaning (Magritte is mocking people who seek interpretations or meaning for art)
. The picture is not meant to have a meaning
. The viewer can not be certain that the painting is depicting the view behind the canvas
. Message: not everything can be explained, we must accept that
